In this Algebra time/distance problem, Bob leaves his house towards Springfield at 60 mi/hr. After 1 hour, Steve follows taking the same road in the same direction as Bob but at 90 mi/hr. How long until Steve catches up to Bob, and how far would they have gone at that point?

Lets consider the time when they meet as t.
ReplyDeleteDistance between Bob and Steve when Steve started: 60 x 1 = 60 mi
So we can say: 60 mi + 60 mph x t hrs = 90 mph x t hrs
=> 30 t = 60
=> t = 2 hrs
Hence, Steve will take two hours to catch up with Bob. Also, by that time, they would've gone 180 miles from the starting point.
