Time Distance Problem 6

In this Algebra time/distance problem, Bob leaves his house towards Springfield at 60 mi/hr. After 1 hour, Steve follows taking the same road in the same direction as Bob but at 90 mi/hr. How long until Steve catches up to Bob, and how far would they have gone at that point?

Time Distance Problem 6 Solution

1 comment:

  1. Lets consider the time when they meet as t.

    Distance between Bob and Steve when Steve started: 60 x 1 = 60 mi

    So we can say: 60 mi + 60 mph x t hrs = 90 mph x t hrs
    => 30 t = 60
    => t = 2 hrs

    Hence, Steve will take two hours to catch up with Bob. Also, by that time, they would've gone 180 miles from the starting point.
