ReplyDelete2. Examine the rise in gasoline prices from 1997 to 2006. The price of regular unleaded gasoline in January 1997 was $1.26 and in January 2006 the price of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.31 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). Use the coordinates (1997, 1.26) and (2006, 2.31) to find the slope (or rate of change) between the two points. Describe how you arrived at your answer.
ReplyDeleteThat isn't a algebra "word" problem -- but I'll help you out anyway--- the years are the x coordinate and the y is the dollar amount -- the slope would be the difference in the y's over the x's or (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1) so you have the points (1997, 1.26) and (2006, 2.31) it would make it easier for the slope if you get rid of the decimals so mutilply everything by 100 (199700, 126) and (200600, 231) now take (231 - 126)/(200600 - 199700) = 105/900 (15 is the gcd of 105 and 900 so divide by 15 on the top and bottom) and you get 7/60 which is the slope

ReplyDelete"While marching, a drum major tosses a baton into the air and catches it. The height is h (in feet) of the baton after t seconds can be modeled by h = -16t exponent 2 + 32t + 6. Find the maximum height of the baton." -- Use the Vertex Formula which is -b/2a where a is the number value before the exponent of 2 in this case -16 and b is the number value before the exponent of 1 which is 32 in this case so it ends up being -32/2(-16) = -32/-32 = 1. Ok so thats the time or t when the baton reaches the maximum height. Now to actually find the height or h just plug 1 back into the original equation and you get -16(1)^2 + 32(1) + 6 = 22 feet
