Steve wants to dilute 8 gallons of 75% alcohol solution to 50%. How many gallons of water must be added to do so?
Solution Here
Well, how much alcohol is in 8 gallons of 75% alcohol solution? 8(.75) = 6 gallons. So however much water we put in (x) will make the final amount 8 + x. But 50% of that has to be alcohol.
ReplyDelete6/(8 + x) = .5
6 = .5(8 + x)
6 = 4 + .5x
Solve that and you'll have your answer.
